I was bored at work – nothing unusual – when I remembered a song that I heard on the radio some 6 or 7 years ago. And then I could think of nothing but that song for the whole day. And I realised I don’t like it and I have no clue what it is about.
So I thought – dangerous, I know – maybe, if I understood where they were going it would actually be enjoyable. So I embarked on a google search about Sappho! Turns out she was a Greek poet who actually existed – I was under the impression she didn’t get to be real, but she did! She was a poet and she existed, that what we know for sure.
And we also have one of those David and Jonathan situation here: was Sappho a lesbian or not? And that nobody knows for sure, but it seems like there’s a consensus agreeing that it’s what she described in her poems. And that is for sure what they talk about in this song. I looked up the lyrics after doing Sappho, and that made the whole thing really clear.
So here’s Sappho by Tribes (2011). I now know what we’re talking about, but I still don’t like it all that much; it does make me want to read some old-ass Greek poetry though.
