Where’s the money?

This week I really panicked – no, it wasn’t a pregnancy scare. I checked my bank account, and there was nothing on it. Well, not nothing, but not enough money to get me to the end of the month. Naturally, I was puzzled. How could I be out of money? Had I been robbed? I went through my statement, and no, it was all me. All the drinks, take away, clothes. All me.

I’m good now, I’ve been paid for job number 2. But before that I had two days during which I thought I’d have to go into survival mode. You know survival mode; it’s when you don’t have money anymore and you have to make it work. That’s when you eat the funky looking squash that has been in the fridge for 3 months and a toast with a sprinkle of paprika sounds like a pretty decent meal.

So to celebrate the fact that I don’t need to go into survival mode just yet – as, apparently, going out and buying fun stuff is not an option – I gathered a few songs about money.

Rich Girl – Gwen Stefani and Eve (Love Angel Music Baby, 2005)

Have you ever watched the Fiedler on the Roof? I tried and I was weak, I didn’t make it to the end. Here, Gwen turns Tevye’s yubby dibby dibbies into nananas, and boom! We’ve got the start of a pop hit.

She’s Expensive – The Virgins (The Virgins, 2008)

Isn’t buying expensive things fun? It really is. I guess a cocaine brunch would be quite expensive… But don’t do drugs, it’s bad for you and expensive.

Small Bill$ – Regina Spektor (Remember Us To Life, 2016)

I know, I know, Regina again. But Regina is like money; can you ever get enough? Well yes, you can, but it takes a lot of it to make you feel like it’s too much.

Money – Pink Floyd (The Dark Side Of The Moon, 1973)

I really enjoy those money noises at the beginning; makes the song kind of fun despite the lyrics.

I Need A Dollar – Aloe Blacc (Good Things, 2010)

I too wish someone would share their dollar in exchange for my stories.

Gold Digger – Kanye West and Jamie Foxx (Late Registration, 2005)

Another good sample, here from Ray Charles. Maybe, he’s onto something with the all gold digger thing; I mean, that’s one path to explore when the survival mode gets too hard, no? Maybe not.
